Q & A with eyewear style icon of Barton Perreira
Patty Perreira, the internationally famed accessories designer met Bill Barton, President of Oliver Peoples, and the sun, stars, and moon aligned in the design world.
Together they created Barton Perreira, a lifestyle brand focusing on style and elegance. “Design DNA” from Perreira came out design houses such as Vera Wang and Prada, while the business knowledge of Barton came from Oliver Peoples. Melding the two created imatch made in style heaven.
Barton Perreira was launched in 2007 out of Los Angeles, and has been a staple in the international design scene since then.
Specializing in handmade eyewear, the brand is synonymous with high-style and exclusivity.
We had the pleasure to sit down with Patty Perreira, to ask her about her start in the competitive design world, her personal style, and what’s next for this year’s must-haves.
How did you get into designing sunglasses?
I’m a self-taught designer, born and raised in Southern California. I began my career in the eyewear industry at Oliver Peoples. During my 18 year tenure there, I discovered my passion for eyewear and honed my design skills. I have designed eyewear for Prada, MiuMiu, Oliver Peoples, Paul Smith, Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, Vera Wang, Bergdorf Goodman, Barney’s New York, Opening Ceremony, Barton Perreira and our new brand, Allied Metal Works.
Did you want to become a fashion designer when you were young?
No, I wanted to be a GoGo Dancer. I lived for Soul Train and American Bandstand. To be honest, I didn’t know what I wanted to be, but I knew I wanted to travel and see the world.
What inspired you to get into designing?
I felt I had something to say and wanted to share my eyewear point of view with the world.
Whats’s your philosophy about the ART of designing?
Instinct….being authentic and true to what inspires me. Maintaining the spirit of the design and not feeling pressure to achieve commercial success.
What do you enjoy most about it?
I love the entire creative process….from the conceptual drawings to the final product. It makes me really happy to see my designs come to life.
What’s the most challenging part?
The timelines can be tough. It takes approximately 1 year to bring a collection of our quality to market.
Who is your most influential fashion designer?
That is a tough question….I can’t name just one. I love Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, Rei Kawakubo and so many others.
How does your design process start?
It’s really intuitive and varies from design to design. It could start with a shape, a color or a certain technology. I am also a very visual person and I find inspiration in most everything.
Does your work reflect your personal fashion taste?
Sometimes, but not always. For me, it’s important to be original and remain true to myself. If it happens to be on trend, that is fine as long as I do not lose myself in the process.
Can you describe your style?
Not really…..I guess you could say I am somewhat classic in an eclectic, yet quirky kind of way!
What can we expect to see for the summer season?
Glamorous Cat-Eyes, as well as, Aviator-Esque sunglasses with beautiful filigree detail in rich colors inspired by the Jamaican Seascape.
Any closing thoughts?
Style is what you create, not what you follow! It’s important to wear what suits you. When you go against the grain, it usually stands the test of time.
